Jonathan Evacuated Safely as Guinea-Bissau Falls Under Military Control

Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has been safely evacuated from Guinea-Bissau after a military coup toppled the government. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that Jonathan and his delegation left the country via a special flight without incident.

Jonathan, who was in Guinea-Bissau as head of the West African Elders Forum Election Observation Mission, joined other international observers in condemning the coup, warning that it threatens the nation’s fragile democracy.

Nigeria’s government described the takeover as an unconstitutional act that endangers regional peace and violates ECOWAS protocols. The coup, led by top military officers, resulted in border closures, gunfire near the presidential palace, and the detention of President Umaro Sissoco Embaló. Borders were later reopened as military leaders announced full control.
