Jannik Sinner has revealed that he is making significant changes to his game following his recent loss to Carlos Alcaraz in the US Open final. The Italian player, who was unable to defend his title in New York, stated that he has been reflecting deeply on his performance ahead of his return to action at the China Open in Beijing.
In a four-set match, Alcaraz not only defeated Sinner but also reclaimed the world number one ranking. Sinner, now ranked second, acknowledged the need to become more unpredictable in his play to overcome his Spanish rival. “We’ve been reflecting a lot,” the 24-year-old said.
Despite not disclosing specific details about the changes he is implementing, Sinner mentioned that he is focusing on several small adjustments. He noted that these changes might lead to an increase in mistakes initially, but he remains optimistic about the positive outcomes they will bring.
Sinner is set to begin his title defense against Croatia’s Marin Cilic on Thursday. Meanwhile, Alcaraz will not be defending his crown in Beijing as he competes in Japan this week.
The rivalry between Sinner and Alcaraz, dubbed “Sincaraz,” is currently the most talked-about in men’s tennis. However, tennis legend Roger Federer has expressed concerns about the current state of tournaments, suggesting that a change in court surfaces is necessary to enhance competition. Sinner echoed these sentiments, agreeing that there is a lack of variety in court speeds on the tour.
“We have more or less similar game situations on the court, yes. This is how it is already since a long time,” Sinner commented. “I don’t know if there is going to be a change or not. I’m just a player who tries to adapt myself in the best possible way.”
