The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially recognised the Labour Party National Working Committee (NWC) led by Nenadi Usman, following a Federal High Court order in Abuja.
A check on INEC’s website on Friday confirmed Usman as Caretaker Committee Chairperson of the Labour Party. Other recognised officials include Senator Darlington Nwokocha (National Secretary), Hamisu Santuraki (National Treasurer), Aisha Madije (National Financial Secretary), and Eric Ifere (National Legal Adviser).
The decision followed a January 21 ruling by Justice Peter Lifu, who upheld Usman’s leadership based on an earlier Supreme Court judgment declaring her the party’s authentic leader. The court ruled that Julius Abure’s tenure had expired and ordered INEC to recognise the caretaker committee until a valid national convention is held.
However, the Abure-led faction has rejected the ruling, insisting it contradicts Supreme Court principles on internal party affairs. The group has vowed to challenge the decision at the Court of Appeal.
The development adds fresh tension to the Labour Party’s long-running leadership crisis ahead of the 2027 elections.
