Former Abia State Governor and Senator, Orji Uzor Kalu, has boldly declared himself the most important politician in Nigeria’s South East region, dismissing any suggestion that Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, is his political leader.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Wednesday, Kalu asserted that his political achievements and influence far surpass Obi’s, pointing to his record of winning two states and his previous presidential bid.
“Peter is not my leader. I’m the most important politician from that zone. I have won two states before under the PPA. I have run for president before. My 4.9 million votes are still there since 2007,” Kalu stated confidently.
He went on to highlight his role in the federal administration under the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, claiming that his party, the Progressive Peoples Alliance (PPA), secured key federal appointments including ministers and ambassadors.
Reinforcing his confidence, Kalu threw a direct challenge to Peter Obi, urging media outlets to arrange a debate between them.
“Arrange in your studio a meeting between me and Peter Obi. Put two of us in the same place,” he said.
Kalu’s comments have sparked mixed reactions across political circles, reigniting debates about political influence and leadership in the South East
