Nigerian Afrobeats queen Tiwa Savage has opened up about feeling underappreciated in the Nigerian music industry, despite her immense global success and contributions to Afrobeats.
Speaking on the Off Air Show, Tiwa expressed her disappointment over what she described as the industry’s lack of acknowledgment for her role in shaping the Afrobeats sound and elevating Nigerian music internationally.
When asked if she believes she has received her due recognition, the “Somebody’s Son” crooner replied bluntly, “No. I’m sorry, I don’t.”
She noted that although she remains proud of her accomplishments — from winning international awards to performing on global stages — she often feels overshadowed, particularly when compared to her male colleagues.
Tiwa highlighted that female artists in Nigeria face tougher scrutiny and less celebration, saying that constant criticism sometimes drowns out appreciation for their achievements.
Nonetheless, the multi-award-winning singer praised emerging stars such as Ayra Starr, Tems, and Diamond Platnumz, acknowledging their efforts in pushing African music beyond borders.
Tiwa concluded by expressing hope that the next generation of female artists would enjoy full recognition for their impact and artistry, without enduring the same struggles she has faced in her career.
