ICPC Debunks Reports of Holding Amnesty International Staff Hostage

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has dismissed as false and misleading reports claiming it held an Amnesty International staff member hostage. The Commission described the publication as capable of causing unnecessary tension and mischief.

According to ICPC spokesperson J. Okor Odey, the alleged confrontation did not occur at Amnesty International’s office but at the IHS Regional Office in Wuse II, Abuja, where operatives were carrying out a lawful assignment. Earlier, ICPC officers who attempted to deliver official correspondence at the facility were obstructed and forcefully escorted out by the CSO and security personnel.

This obstruction led the Commission to obtain a search warrant as permitted by law. ICPC noted that the Director of Regulatory Affairs at IHS, Saidu Abdullahi, has since apologised, describing the incident as unfortunate and assuring corrective measures.

The Commission urged the public to disregard the misleading report entirely.
