ICE Fear Spreads: Nigerians in US Go Underground, Others Return Home Quietly

Fear and uncertainty are gripping many Nigerians living in the United States as President Donald Trump’s renewed immigration crackdown intensifies nationwide. Reports indicate that several Nigerians have stopped going to work, gone into hiding, or quietly returned home to avoid arrest by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Since Trump’s inauguration in January 2025, aggressive deportation policies have triggered panic among undocumented immigrants. According to affected Nigerians, ICE raids have disrupted daily life, forcing families to abandon jobs and seek alternative means of survival.

A Nigerian woman, identified as Senior Immigrant, described widespread trauma following the death of an immigrant healthcare worker in Minnesota. She said fear of sudden arrest has pushed many Nigerians into home-based businesses and online trading.

Community leaders confirm the trend. President of the Nigerian community in Maryland, Chris Ademiluyi, revealed that while some Nigerians are self-deporting, many prefer to remain in hiding due to Nigeria’s economic and security challenges.

Immigration support groups say affected Nigerians are now weighing legal options, unsure whether to stay, leave, or regularise their status as anxiety continues to rise.
