The outgoing Administrator of Rivers State, Vice Admiral (Rtd) Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas, reflected on his six-month stewardship during a Thanksgiving service at the Ecumenical Centre in Port Harcourt. Ibas noted that the state was deeply divided before President Bola Tinubu intervened to restore stability.
During his address, Ibas emphasized the importance of nurturing the seeds of love and peace he had sown during his tenure, as the state prepares to transition back to democratic governance on September 18. He stated, “By God’s grace, and with the support of Mr President and all of you, we have walked through those difficult days together; the survival and relative stability we enjoy today is a testimony of God’s faithfulness.”
Ibas cautioned political actors against returning the state to chaos, declaring, “No political victory or personal gain is worth the blood of any Rivers citizen. The progress and prosperity of Rivers State must be placed above personal or partisan interest.”
He also urged the youth to reject violence and instead focus on building a prosperous state. “The youth should not avail themselves to be used as instruments of violence but to instead channel their energies into building a peaceful and prosperous state,” he said.
Reflecting on Ibas’ appointment as the sole administrator in March 2025, it was noted that it followed months of political turmoil in Rivers State. President Tinubu suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara amid a power struggle with his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, leading to violent clashes and mass defections between political parties.
As Ibas’ tenure concludes, attention turns to the anticipated return of Governor Fubara. Arrangements are reportedly being finalized for his reinstatement, with hopes that he will prioritize reconciliation and stability. However, some residents express concerns that old rivalries may resurface if political actors do not focus on the state’s progress.
Pastor Barasin Ogan of the Chapel of Everlasting Grace, who delivered the sermon at the Thanksgiving service, encouraged Rivers people to forgive past grievances and unite behind their leaders. “Let us work together as one family to heal the wounds of yesterday and secure a brighter future for Rivers State,” he urged.
