I Was So Skinny You Could See My Ribs’ — Bracket’s Vast Opens Up on His Near-Death Cancer Battle

Nigerian singer Vast, one-half of the famous music duo Bracket, has opened up about his frightening battle with lymphoma, a type of blood cancer, which nearly claimed his life in 2013.

Speaking in a recent interview on the AFRIMMA Podcast, Vast, born Nwachukwu Ozioko, recalled how the illness and treatment process pushed him to the brink of death.

“It was a time in my life I will never forget. The people around me showed me love. Normally after making money everyone gets their cut, but during this period, everyone on the team brought their money together to treat me,” he said.

Vast explained that while cancer itself was devastating, the treatment was even more life-threatening. Doctors began procedures on his spine and made him sign a waiver stating he couldn’t hold them responsible if anything went wrong.

“I nearly passed from the treatment. At some point, I lost so much blood that it affected my heart and I had to be admitted for a blood transfusion. I was very skinny that you could see my ribs. It also made us spend a lot of money,” he recounted.

His music partner, Smash, admitted he was shocked by the diagnosis, given Vast’s healthy lifestyle. He revealed that doctors initially struggled to detect the illness, with blood samples sent to South Africa yielding no results for months.

“They said they sent the sample in September, but by December no result had been given. I had to confront the doctor, telling him that if anything happened to Vast, he would be held responsible. That was when he advised us to take him abroad,” Smash said.

It was later discovered—thanks to the persistence of a nurse who recommended an ultrasound—that Vast had a growth spreading in his body, later confirmed in the UK to be cancerous.

Thankfully, after years of treatment, Vast announced during the interview that he is now cancer-free, sharing his story as a testimony of survival and resilience.
