A member of the House of Representatives, Yusuf Gadgi, has voiced strong opposition to the establishment of state police, asserting that governors cannot be trusted with policing authority.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today program on Tuesday, Gadgi, who chairs the House Committee on Defence, emphasized that community policing is a more effective solution. He cautioned that granting governors control over state police would exacerbate insecurity.
Gadgi highlighted the need for adequately funded community policing as a safer alternative to state police. He described the recent killings linked to cross-border assaults as “very unfortunate and tormenting.”
Furthermore, he pointed out that forest reserves have become “safe havens for bandits and kidnappers,” contributing to the rise in insecurity across Plateau and other regions.
In his remarks, Gadgi defended President Bola Tinubu’s administration, commending its efforts in providing resources and enacting laws to bolster security agencies. He praised the performance of the National Security Adviser but stressed that insecurity will continue unless security commanders are held accountable.
