House Minority Caucus Alleges Executive Altered Tax Law to Undermine Legislature

The Minority Caucus of the House of Representatives has raised concerns over discrepancies in the Nigeria Tax Administration Act (NTAA) 2025. They allege that the version published in the official gazette differs from the one passed by the National Assembly, suggesting the Executive may have altered sections to expand taxpayer obligations and bypass legislative authority.

Chairman of the ad-hoc committee, Hon. Afam Ogene, highlighted changes in key sections, including lowered reporting thresholds, new deposit requirements for appeals, expanded powers of arrest, and the removal of petroleum income tax and VAT from federal tax definitions. The gazetted law also mandated petroleum tax computations in US dollars and removed National Assembly oversight provisions, undermining accountability.

The Minority Caucus, under Hon. Kingsley Chinda, has called for a thorough investigation to safeguard legislative independence and democracy, stressing that aligning Certified True Copies with official releases is critical to restore public confidence and protect the sanctity of the National Assembly.
