Fresh and heartbreaking details have emerged regarding the death of Kehinde Adeoye, a United Capital staff member who perished in the fire at Afriland Towers in Lagos.
A close friend, Boluwatife, recounted the final moments of the deceased, painting a harrowing picture of her struggle before succumbing. According to the account, Kehinde, affectionately known as Kenny, remained conscious for several hours as smoke engulfed the building, desperately reaching out for help while battling to breathe.
Tragically, it was smoke inhalation—not burns—that claimed her life. In her final moments, she expressed concern for her family, pleading with her husband to care for their children.
Boluwatife lamented the systemic failures that contributed to Kenny’s death, blaming inadequate emergency response and lax safety standards. She described Kenny as a dedicated professional whose promising life was cruelly cut short.
In Boluwatife’s words:
“In her final hours, she was trapped, she reached out for help! She was conscious till she felt life draining out of her. Smoke inhalation! Smoke! Not a scar. ‘Ba mi to ju awon omo yen’ – some of her last words to her husband. Nigeria failed her! Didn’t have to die. Rest Kenny.”
The tragedy has reignited conversations about fire safety, emergency preparedness, and workplace protection in Nigeria, as the nation mourns the loss of another bright life.
