Health Ministry Raises Alarm as Nigeria Faces Multiple Disease Burdens

The Federal Ministry of Health has warned that Nigeria is now battling multiple layers of disease simultaneously, placing increasing pressure on the nation’s fragile healthcare system.

Speaking at the inauguration of the Nuparadigm Health Foundation, a ministry representative, Abraham Emmanuel, said Nigeria is no longer dealing with only infectious diseases but also a rising surge in non-communicable illnesses such as hypertension, diabetes and stroke. He noted that these conditions are now affecting younger Nigerians, largely due to lifestyle factors.

Emmanuel stressed that poor diets, physical inactivity, tobacco use and harmful alcohol consumption are driving a silent health crisis, with many citizens unaware of the risks. He urged stronger prevention, education and early intervention efforts.

The ministry also announced the final interview stage of the National Health Fellows Programme, designed to deploy trained health fellows across all 774 local government areas to strengthen grassroots healthcare delivery.
