Residents of Zonkwa town in Zangon Kataf Local Government Area of Kaduna State were thrown into panic on Friday evening after gunmen stormed a local police station, killing two officers on duty.
According to reports by Daily Trust, the assailants opened fire immediately after arriving at the station, which is located near Kamyim Hotel, Kurmin-Bi Zonkwa. Witnesses revealed that the attackers were on a mission to free some suspected vandals earlier arrested in Kachia town.
“They thought the suspects were being held at the Zonkwa Police Station,” one eyewitness said. “Unfortunately, by the time they realized the suspects weren’t there, two officers had already been shot dead.”
Residents were seen gathered around the station after the attack, expressing fear over the growing insecurity in the region. Although calm has since returned, the Kaduna State Police Command is yet to release an official statement as of the time of filing this report.
