“Gov’t Romances Terrorists but Teargasses Protesters”’ – Nnamdi Kanu’s Lawyer, Ejimakor

Special Counsel to the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, Barrister Aloy Ejimakor, has reacted to former U.S. President Donald Trump’s designation of Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern (CPC)”, following allegations of widespread killings of Christians in the country.

In a viral post shared via his X (formerly Twitter) handle, Ejimakor said the U.S. move was “inevitable”, accusing the Nigerian government of teargassing peaceful protesters while allegedly “romancing terrorists in public.”

“When a nation tear-gasses peaceful protesters but romances terrorists in full glare of the public, being slammed as a Country of Particular Concern becomes inevitable,” Ejimakor wrote.

He shared images showing injuries sustained from two direct teargas hits during a recent protest, which called for the release of Nnamdi Kanu.

Naija News recalls that Ejimakor, alongside Kanu’s brother, Prince Emmanuel, and activist Omoyele Sowore, were arrested in Abuja during a peaceful demonstration near the Presidential Villa, demanding the IPOB leader’s release.

The protesters were subsequently arraigned before a Kuje Magistrate Court and remanded in prison, where Ejimakor reportedly collapsed after inhaling teargas, but was later treated by the prison’s medical team.

Trump had, a day earlier, declared that the U.S. would no longer “stand by” amid reports of alleged Christian genocide in Nigeria, blaming “radical Islamists” for the violence.

Ejimakor’s statement has since fueled intense debate online, with many Nigerians divided over Trump’s comments and Ejimakor’s defense of the U.S. designation.
