‘Governors’ Mass Defection To APC Is Not About Good Governance In The Country’ – NNPP Chieftain, Johnson

he New Nigeria Peoples Party has criticised the growing wave of governors defecting to the All Progressives Congress, saying the movement has nothing to do with improving governance in Nigeria. NNPP National Publicity Secretary, Ladipo Johnson, described the trend as unfortunate and disappointing.

Speaking on a national television programme, Johnson said the reasons behind the mass defections remain unclear, stressing that Nigerians have not seen any convincing link between the moves and better leadership or public welfare. His comments come amid reported defections of several governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, alongside speculations surrounding Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf of the NNPP.

Johnson argued that the defections raise serious concerns about political ideology and commitment to democratic values, adding that frequent party switching weakens public trust. According to him, governance should be driven by vision and accountability, not political convenience.

He said, “I think that the governors will know individually the reasons why they are fawning over the president or over the APC. Some have moved from the PDP and what have you. I’m not so sure it’s about good governance or about the country. It’s such a shame and a pity.

“But I hope that, at the end of the day, it’s only the people who can decide what would happen. Notwithstanding that you have 36 states and governors, something else might happen. It’s not over until it’s over. We are just entering the election year, and the elections will be held next year.”
