Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State has expressed strong concerns regarding the limited number of Local Government Areas (LGAs) in the state, which stands at only eight. In a statement made on Monday in Yenegoa, he described this situation as a form of injustice.
Diri emphasized the importance of a national dialogue to address this issue, stating, “I am very pleased to commend the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Bola Tinubu, for his interest in local government administration.”
He continued, “Since the beginning of my tenure up until today, I have been advocating for true federalism. We cannot persist with a scenario where a Bayelsa that produces oil and gas for Nigeria has only eight LGAs, while others have 40 and 44 LGAs. It is injustice.”
The governor reiterated the need for local government creation to be managed by state governments, allowing them the capacity to fund the local governments they establish.
