Gov Yusuf’s APC Defection Rumour Stirs Fresh Kano Emirship Anxiety

Fresh concerns have emerged in Kano State over the lingering emirship tussle following reports that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf plans to defect from the NNPP to the All Progressives Congress, APC.

Political observers warn that the rumoured move could reopen wounds surrounding the rivalry between Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II and the 15th Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, a dispute that has remained unresolved in court. The speculation reportedly informed Yusuf’s recent closed-door meeting with President Bola Tinubu and has heightened tension among supporters of the governor and loyalists of NNPP leader, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

Analysts caution that a political realignment may weaken the forces that restored Sanusi to the throne, while Bayero’s supporters see a possible opportunity for renewed contestation. Security experts have also warned that the existence of two power centres within the emirate could deepen instability if political balances shift.

Stakeholders are urging caution, warning that Kano’s fragile peace could be threatened as 2027 approaches.
