As Nigeria celebrates 65 years of independence, global tech giant Google has joined in the commemoration with a special doodle on its homepage. The doodle, designed in the iconic green-white-green colors of the Nigerian flag with an eagle motif, symbolizes the resilience and strength of Africa’s most populous nation.
Clicking on the doodle directs users to key historical facts, timelines, and milestones that shaped Nigeria’s journey from independence in 1960 to the present day.
In his Independence Day broadcast to the nation, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu reassured citizens that the country is gradually overcoming the tough pains of economic reforms. He declared that “the worst is over,” while highlighting recent gains as proof that Nigeria is on the path of recovery.
According to Tinubu, Nigeria recorded a second-quarter GDP growth of 4.23 percent—the strongest in four years. He further noted that inflation has eased to 20.12 percent, foreign reserves are on the rise, and oil output has significantly improved, boosting the nation’s revenue.
The President also revealed that his administration has disbursed N330 billion to eight million vulnerable households through the National Social Investment Programme. He added that his government remains committed to massive infrastructure projects across the federation to spur development and create jobs.
Beyond economic strides, Tinubu called for unity, tolerance, and peace among Nigerians across ethnic and religious lines. He emphasized that diversity should remain a strength, not a dividing factor, as the country works collectively to achieve lasting progress.
“Let us embrace peace, cooperation, and national pride. Our differences are natural, but they must never hinder our collective progress,” the President stated.
