Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has highlighted electoral manipulation as one of the most significant threats to democracy in Africa. He made these remarks during the 2025 Goodluck Jonathan Foundation (GJF) democracy dialogue held in Accra, Ghana.
Jonathan emphasized that when democracy fails to meet the expectations of the populace, it can lead to desperation and open the door to authoritarianism. He urged leaders to adopt democratic practices that secure a better future for children and ensure that their voices are heard.
“Democracy in the African continent is going through a period of strain and risk of collapse unless stakeholders come together to rethink and reform it. Electoral manipulation remains one of the biggest threats in Africa,” he stated.
He called for a reevaluation of the electoral systems in African nations, noting that manipulation often occurs as individuals seek to maintain power by any means necessary. “We in Africa must begin to look at our democracy and rethink it in a way that works well for us and our people,” Jonathan added.
