Gold Miners’ Clash Turns Bloody in Yauri — Curfew Declared After Violence Erupts

Tension has gripped Yauri Local Government Area of Kebbi State after a violent clash between gold miners in Garin Katta community spiraled out of control, leading to deaths, property destruction, and panic among residents.

The incident, which started last Saturday, was triggered by a misunderstanding among miners that quickly escalated into bloodshed.

How It Started

Eyewitnesses revealed that the crisis began when a group of gold miners allegedly attacked and killed a man. Enraged relatives of the victim retaliated the next day, sparking reprisal attacks from the miners.

The conflict soon turned chaotic, with shops vandalised and motorcycles set ablaze indiscriminately.

Authorities Step In

Confirming the situation, the Chairman of Yauri LGA, Abubakar Shuaibu, announced the imposition of a 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. curfew to restore calm.

He said he had notified the Police Area Commander and the DSS when the violence began, and later sought military support as the attacks spread into the town.

The deceased victim was buried according to Islamic rites after security operatives recovered his body.

Escalation Despite Warnings

Shuaibu disclosed that while some individuals were ready to name the killers, others blocked the effort, worsening tensions.

“Conflict is harmful, and God is displeased with anyone who initiates it. That is why we have deployed security forces to maintain peace and stability,” he warned.

What Next for Yauri?

As security patrols continue in Garin Katta and surrounding areas, the exact number of casualties remains unknown. Authorities are urging residents to stay calm while investigations and peace talks progress.
