Ghanaian Authorities Take Action Against Nigerian Business Owner Amid Controversy

A Nigerian man residing in Ghana since 2007 is facing a distressing situation after receiving a notice to shut down his business. A recent video captures the moment the market’s chairman confronted the businessman, accusing him of refusing to comply with local regulations.

The unidentified entrepreneur defended himself, stating that he would not adhere to a law demanding the closure of his business, especially since he possesses certified documents allowing him to operate legally.

Despite his long-standing presence in the market and a close relationship with the market chairman, he was denied any exception to continue his operations.

In a statement to the press, the Ghanaian market chairman expressed concerns over foreign nationals, particularly Nigerians, violating laws that restrict foreigners from retailing products while also acting as wholesalers. He stated, “A lot of Nigerians have closed their shop; you’re not different from them. We called the Nigerians to meet with them concerning issues in the markets. We’re going to prosecute any Ghanaian fronting for a Nigerian. The problem is that they are invading the market by wholesaling at the same time, doing retailing in the market, we can’t compete. The GIPC law states that all foreigners should do supply/wholesaling, not retailing.”
