Former Labour Party (LP) governorship candidate in Lagos State, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, has accused the federal government of allegedly working towards establishing a one-party state, warning that Nigeria’s democracy could be in grave danger.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Sunday, Rhodes-Vivour expressed serious doubts about the credibility of the 2027 general elections, citing violent disruptions of opposition gatherings across the country.
He said:
“Opposition parties are trying to gather and have meetings and they are being met with violence. From Kaduna to Gombe. Just like what happened in Lagos yesterday. If you want to talk about big ideas in politics, you will find that the federal government and state governments seemingly want to create a one-party state. If Nigerians and political actors don’t resist that, what is the guarantee there will be an election at this rate?”
The politician stressed that the rising intolerance against opposition groups is a red flag for Nigeria’s democratic future, insisting that the right to political assembly is protected under the constitution.
Meanwhile, Rhodes-Vivour officially announced his defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), noting that his political movement remains focused on mobilizing young Nigerians for a better leadership alternative.
He further revealed that he intends to meet with the Lagos State Commissioner of Police to clarify whether security operatives deployed at a recent ADC meeting were there to provide protection or to suppress opposition activities.
