Rivers State is once again sliding into political tension barely three months after President Bola Tinubu brokered peace between FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and Governor Siminalayi Fubara. The latest crisis deepened after Speaker Martins Amaewhule and 15 other lawmakers loyal to Wike dumped the PDP for the APC, accusing Fubara of neglecting public schools in the state.
This follows longstanding political battles over control of the state’s structure, including previous defections, court battles, and the 2025 emergency rule that suspended both the executive and legislature for six months.
The Assembly also questioned the governor’s delay in presenting commissioner-nominees, further heightening tensions. Civil groups warn that the renewed conflict threatens governance and public welfare, urging politicians to avoid plunging the state into another round of instability.
