FIFA Approves Three for DR Congo vs Nigeria

DR Congo has received a significant boost ahead of Sunday’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying playoff final against Nigeria, as three Europe-born players have been officially cleared by FIFA to represent the Leopards.

The final approval was granted through FIFA’s Change of Association platform, confirming the eligibility of Michel-Ange Balikwisha (Celtic), Mario Stroeykens (Anderlecht), and Matthieu Epolo (Standard Liège).

All three players previously represented Belgium at the youth level but have now completed a one-time international switch to DR Congo.

New Additions Strengthen DR Congo’s Options

The Congolese federation submitted the necessary applications earlier this year, and FIFA has now validated their transition.

The trio is immediately available for selection in Sunday’s high-stakes clash against the Super Eagles.

Balikwisha and Epolo were already on the bench during DR Congo’s 1-0 win over Cameroon in the semi-final, following their approvals on November 11 and 12.

Meanwhile, Stroeykens missed out on Thursday’s matchday squad because his eligibility confirmation arrived only hours before kick-off.

Boost Ahead of Final Showdown with Nigeria

DR Congo enters the final with increased squad depth and tactical flexibility, thanks to the timely clearance of three players highly rated in Europe.

Their availability boosts morale within the team as the Leopards prepare to face a Nigerian side eager to return to the World Cup after missing the 2022 edition.

Sunday’s final in Rabat will determine which team advances to the March 2026 intercontinental playoff.
