The Federal Government has inaugurated a ₦40 billion CCTV control centre for the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos, aimed at boosting security, controlling speeding, and preventing suicide attempts on the iconic bridge.
Minister of Works, David Umahi, said the project followed a comprehensive rehabilitation ordered by President Bola Tinubu after the administration inherited severely deteriorated bridges in Lagos. He explained that the CCTV system allows real-time monitoring of activities on and beneath the bridge, strengthening enforcement and emergency response.
Umahi disclosed that the project includes surveillance boats, patrol vehicles, and monitoring equipment to be handed over to security agencies, particularly the police. He warned motorists against excessive speeding, stressing the need for strict adherence to traffic rules.
The Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, Olufemi Dare, described the centre as the first of its kind in Nigeria, featuring advanced monitoring of both the bridge and underwater infrastructure. He confirmed the project cost at ₦40.17 billion, with ₦36 billion already paid.
