FG Moves to Regulate TikTok, Push for More Skill-Based and Educational Content

The Federal Government has announced plans to introduce stricter regulations on TikTok and other social media platforms in a bid to promote skill-based and educational content among Nigerian youths.

According to officials, the move is aimed at redirecting youth creativity towards more productive and developmental digital engagement, rather than the entertainment-driven trends that currently dominate platforms like TikTok.

A top government source noted that while social media has given many Nigerians a voice and creative outlet, the rising obsession with “viral entertainment” is discouraging meaningful content creation.

“We want to encourage young people to use social media for skills, education, and innovation — not just for dance videos or pranks,” the official said.

However, the proposed regulation has sparked widespread public debate, especially among young Nigerians and digital creators, who see it as another attempt by the government to control online freedom.

Public Reactions Trail TikTok Regulation Proposal

Shortly after the announcement, social media platforms — including X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram — were flooded with reactions.

Critics argued that the government should focus on tackling unemployment, inflation, and insecurity rather than monitoring online creativity.

One user wrote:

“Here we go again. Instead of fixing unemployment or the economy, they want to regulate TikTok.”

Another added:

“How about focusing on skill empowerment offline first before policing vibes online?”

Despite the backlash, some Nigerians backed the proposal, saying it could help promote responsible digital use and reduce harmful content among youths.

For now, all eyes are on how the policy will be implemented and whether it will balance creativity with responsibility — or become another social media restriction controversy in Nigeria.
