The Federal Government of Nigeria has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic petrol tanker explosion that claimed dozens of lives in Essa, Katcha Local Government Area of Niger State.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, commiserated with the government and people of Niger State, describing the incident as “heartbreaking” and a stark reminder of the dangers associated with fuel tanker accidents in the country.
“The Federal Government expresses its deep sorrow over the tragic petrol tanker explosion that occurred in Essa, Katcha Local Government Area of Niger State, a few days ago, which claimed many innocent lives and left several others injured.
We join the government and people of Niger State in mourning this painful loss,” the statement read.
Idris further emphasized that every Nigerian life is valuable, adding that such avoidable tragedies highlight the urgent need for strict adherence to safety measures during emergencies.
According to reports, at least 30 people were killed and about 40 others sustained injuries in the explosion, which occurred when residents reportedly gathered to scoop fuel from a fallen tanker before it burst into flames.
The Federal Government reiterated its commitment to working with relevant agencies and state governments to enhance road safety enforcement, prevent future disasters, and provide assistance to the victims’ families.
