The Federal Government of Nigeria has welcomed the conviction and sentencing of Finland-based Biafra separatist agitator, Simon Ekpa, describing it as a major victory in the country’s ongoing fight against terrorism.
Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, in a statement on Monday, hailed the ruling of the Päijät-Häme District Court in Finland, which sentenced Ekpa to six years imprisonment for multiple terrorism-related offences.
“We welcome the news of Simon Ekpa’s conviction by a Finnish court for terrorism-related crimes and his sentencing to six years in prison. This is a major victory for the Nigerian people in the collective fight against terror,” Idris said via his official X (Twitter) account.
Ekpa, who has long resided in Lahti, Finland, and once served as a local councillor, was found guilty of:
- Participating in the activities of a terrorist organization
- Inciting the public to commit crimes for terrorist purposes
- Supplying separatist groups with weapons, explosives, and ammunition
- Aggravated tax fraud
- Violating Finland’s Lawyers Act
The Finnish court, after a 12-day trial between May 30 and June 25, 2025, unanimously ruled that Ekpa was an influential member of a militant separatist movement pushing for the secession of Biafra from Nigeria.
According to Finnish outlet Yle, the judges held that Ekpa actively used his influence on social media (especially X, formerly Twitter) to incite crimes in Nigeria while coordinating violent separatist activities abroad.
Ekpa, who denied all charges, was arrested in December 2024 by Finnish authorities following investigations linking him to violent unrest and propaganda incitement in Nigeria. The court has now ordered that he remain in custody to serve his sentence.
This ruling marks a significant step in Nigeria’s collaboration with international partners to combat terrorism and separatist violence beyond its borders.
