Human rights activist Femi Falana (SAN) has raised alarms over reports indicating that Dangote fuel is being sold at lower prices in Togo than in Nigeria. During an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Falana urged the federal government to reconsider the proposed 5 percent fuel surcharge, cautioning against the imposition of multiple taxes that could further burden Nigerian consumers.
“I guess the government wants to go back to the drawing table and ensure that it is not accused of multiple taxes or double taxation because consumers will pay VAT for buying fuel. They will now put an additional 5 percent tax,” Falana stated. He highlighted that Dangote fuel, which is sourced from Nigeria, is reportedly cheaper in Togo by approximately 65 naira.
Falana emphasized the need for the government to address these issues to prevent additional hardship for Nigerians. In a related matter, he criticized the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) for its proposal to increase salaries for political office holders, labeling it as insensitive given the current economic challenges facing the country.
