Female Pastor Sparks Debate: Couples Should Put Spouses Above Parents in Marriage

A female pastor has gone viral after boldly advising couples to stop placing their parents above their partners in marriage.

In the trending video, the preacher stressed that one of the major reasons many homes are failing is because husbands and wives often give their parents more priority than their spouses.

According to her, true marital success can only be achieved when partners value and respect each other above all others — including parents.

“There are people whose marriages are not working because they put their parents higher than their own marriage, higher than the person they’ve married,” she emphasized in the clip.

Her comments quickly set social media abuzz, sparking heated debates among netizens. While some agreed, citing personal experiences of interference from parents, others argued that parental influence remains crucial in marriage.

The video has since drawn thousands of reactions, with many Nigerians passionately weighing in on where loyalty in marriage should truly lie — with one’s partner or one’s parents.

Netizens Reactions…

Tamen Christopher reacted: “My mother first. Do you know where we started after the passing away of my father? She is the only one on earth that can genuinely say she will take my bullet and she will mean it. If you are not coming to marry the two of us, forget.”

Amos Olusegun wrote: “And many in-laws on both sides retain the mindset of ‘omo wa ni, na our child,’ believing they still hold a special place of authority in the lives of their sons and daughters who are now husbands and wives. Hence, they want to control excessively. I call it skewed mentality.”

Godfrey Glorious said: “My wife secretly renovated her father’s house without telling me. Changed everything, POP, aluminum, the whole works. I only got a call from my father-in-law thanking me for the house I built for them. I was shocked but kept quiet. That’s what the pastor is talking about.”

Idamiebi Fiberesima commented: “Maybe the video was not long enough for the woman to explain herself. She’s not saying parents should be discarded, but your responsibility is first to your immediate family before anyone else.”

Jerry Ntui said: “Many couples will not like this message.”

Victor Zvenhamo stated: “Parents are higher no matter what you are trying to express.”

Eze Kingsley added: “My parents are my pride and my responsibility.”
