Fear in Ibadan as Secondary School Students Engage in Violent Sword Clash

Tension has gripped parts of Ibadan, Oyo State, following a violent clash involving students from three secondary schools who reportedly engaged in a sword fight that left residents in shock.

Eyewitnesses described the confrontation as “more than intense,” noting that the teenagers fought openly with sharp weapons in broad daylight. The chaos caused panic across nearby streets as onlookers fled for safety.

Videos circulating on social media showed groups of young boys charging at one another with swords and sticks, in scenes reminiscent of street gang wars.

Residents have expressed deep concern over the disturbing trend of student violence in Ibadan, warning that it could be linked to the early recruitment of teenagers into political thuggery and cult groups.

Some community members pointed out that several notorious Ibadan gang leaders, including the late Ekugbemi, Ebila, and Ege, allegedly began their violent paths from secondary school fights before being absorbed into political structures.

One resident lamented, “Political thugs begin their lout and violence career right from secondary schools in Ibadan. It’s a cycle we’ve refused to break.”

Older residents recalled that rivalries among schools have long been part of Ibadan’s youth culture, but noted that the current wave of violence has become far more dangerous, with weapons now a common feature.

“Back then, anything fit sup. If you can’t fight, you’ll know how to run,” said one former student.

While some observers believe the trend has slightly reduced in recent years as more youths turn to online hustles, music, or business, others fear that without urgent intervention, the violent culture could resurface even stronger among secondary school students.
