Fear Grips Nigerian Military After Failed Tinubu Coup Attempt

Tension is rising among senior military officers after the failed coup attempt against President Bola Tinubu in September 2026. Over 40 officers are reportedly under investigation, with personnel adopting a low-profile stance, avoiding discussions on political matters or military takeovers.

The Defence Headquarters confirmed the incident, stating that implicated officers will face trial before a military judicial panel, following the Armed Forces Act. While no formal directive was issued, officers are expected to exercise caution.

Major General Samaila Uba, Director of Defence Information, stressed that the investigation focused on discipline, professionalism, and loyalty, and measures taken are strictly disciplinary, not political.

The military remains committed to constitutional governance, assuring Nigerians that accountability will follow due process. Despite unease, the Armed Forces emphasise stability and uphold professional standards, signalling that breaches of military ethics will not be tolerated.

The coup scare has fundamentally changed the climate within the Armed Forces, making discussions of sensitive political issues a virtual taboo and reshaping the approach to internal discipline and vigilance.
