Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has called for urgent and far-reaching reforms to Nigeria’s highway safety system following a fatal crash on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway that claimed the lives of two close associates of boxing star Anthony Joshua.
In a condolence message, the Kogi Central lawmaker described the incident as devastating and avoidable, lamenting the recurring loss of lives on Nigerian roads due to poor infrastructure, weak enforcement and delayed emergency response. She urged the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to strengthen enforcement of traffic regulations and appealed to the federal government to prioritise rest stations and properly equipped lay-bys to curb fatigue-related crashes.
Akpoti-Uduaghan also advocated the creation of a dedicated highway emergency rescue system to ensure faster medical response. Meanwhile, FRSC officials confirmed prompt intervention at the crash site, while motorists were advised to drive within speed limits, especially during the festive period.
