A security expert, Kabiru Adamu, has faulted the Federal Government’s decision to classify kidnappers and bandits as terrorists, insisting that such authority rests solely with the courts under Nigerian law.
Adamu reacted to the Federal Government’s position, reiterated by the Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, that bandits would henceforth be treated as terrorists to strengthen security operations. Speaking on Channels Television, the Beacon Consulting boss stressed that the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, amended in 2022, clearly outlines the legal process for such designations.
According to him, neither President Bola Tinubu nor the Federal Executive Council has the constitutional power to make such declarations without court approval. Adamu warned that bypassing due process could lead to politicisation and threaten democracy, urging the government to tackle insecurity strictly within the law.
