Ex-Super Eagles Star Victor Ezeji Arrested in Rivers Over Alleged N40m Dud Cheque Fraud

The Rivers State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of former Super Eagles striker, Victor Ezeji, over allegations of fraud involving dud cheques reportedly worth nearly ₦40 million.

According to The Guardian, the 44-year-old football veteran was picked up on Monday by officers of the Rivers State Criminal Investigation Department after weeks of surveillance.

Investigations revealed that Ezeji and his wife, Celestina, allegedly purchased 60,000 litres of diesel from businessman Dagogo Emmanuel in July. The couple was said to have issued cheques amounting to ₦39.8 million, which later bounced.

Reports further indicated that the couple went into hiding after the transaction failed, prompting security operatives to place them under close watch.

Upon his arrest, the former Enyimba International striker admitted to signing the cheques but denied being directly involved in the deal, claiming that his wife handled the transaction. Celestina is still on the run at the time of this report.

Ezeji, one of Nigeria’s most celebrated domestic league stars, had a career spanning nearly two decades. He featured for clubs including Sharks, Dolphins, Sunshine Stars, Heartland, and Enyimba, where he twice lifted the CAF Champions League trophy.
