Peru’s Supreme Court on Thursday sentenced former leftist president Pedro Castillo to 11 years, five months, and 15 days in prison for attempting to dissolve Congress and avoid impeachment. Castillo, a former rural schoolteacher turned president, was arrested while heading to the Mexican embassy for asylum.
The court convicted him of “conspiracy to commit rebellion” but acquitted him of abuse of power and disturbing public order. His ex-prime minister, Betssy Chavez, also received an 11.5-year sentence but has fled to Mexico.
Castillo’s removal in 2022 triggered mass protests among his rural supporters, leading to at least 50 deaths. His arrest highlights ongoing political instability in Peru, which has seen seven presidents since 2016, with multiple impeachments and resignations.
