EU Commits €557m to Aid West, Central Africa Including North-West Nigeria

The European Union has earmarked €557 million for humanitarian assistance in West and Central Africa as part of its €1.9 billion 2026 global aid budget. Nigeria’s North-West region is highlighted among priority areas alongside the Sahel, Lake Chad Basin, Central and Southern Africa, the Great Lakes, and the Greater Horn of Africa.

The funds aim to support vulnerable populations with emergency food, shelter, healthcare, child education, and protection for at-risk groups. European Commissioner Hadja Lahbib emphasized that the global humanitarian system faces unprecedented strain, noting that public funding alone cannot meet current needs.

Beyond Africa, the EU has allocated €448 million for the Middle East, €145 million for Ukraine, €126 million for Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Iran, and smaller amounts for Central/South America, Southeast Asia, and North Africa. An additional €415 million is reserved for rapid response to emergencies and supply chain support.

The EU remains a leading humanitarian donor, coordinating aid via the European Emergency Response Coordination Centre and partnering with NGOs, UN agencies, and international organizations.
