The Emir of Kano, Lamido Muhammadu Sanusi II, has voiced his discontent over Nigeria’s prolonged lack of quality leadership. Speaking at the second Kano International Poetry Festival (KAPFEST) in Kano on Saturday, he emphasized that good governance is essential for the country’s recovery from its current state.
Sanusi described Nigerian leaders as ‘lousy’ and lamented that they often focus on trivial matters while global leaders engage in critical discussions on climate change and artificial intelligence. He stated, ‘You rise and fall with the quality of your leadership, and Nigeria has had lousy leadership for a long time.’
He further criticized the current political discourse in Nigeria, noting, ‘We are still talking about Yoruba or Igbo or Hausa, Northern or Christian. We are still mired in that debate. We are still in conversations that we had in the 1960s.’
Additionally, Sanusi remarked that Nigeria would have faced bankruptcy had the federal government not removed the fuel subsidy. He urged the youth to take charge of the nation, stating, ‘If you look at the billions spent on subsidy, if that money had been spent on refineries… my objection is the subsidy on consumption.’
Sanusi’s comments highlight the urgent need for a shift in leadership and priorities in Nigeria.
