Electoral Act: PDP Warns Senate Not To Test Nigerians’ Patience

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has cautioned the Senate against taking Nigerians for granted amid controversy over proposed amendments to the Electoral Act.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Morning Brief, PDP National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, described Nigerians as patient citizens whose tolerance should not be abused. He reacted to reports that the Senate rejected a clause seeking to make electronic transmission of election results mandatory.

Ememobong stressed that it is the core responsibility of lawmakers to legislate in the best interest of the country, especially after the Supreme Court identified gaps in the existing law and referred the matter back to the National Assembly.

He warned that ignoring public expectations could deepen distrust in the electoral process, recalling that national patience has limits, as seen during the #EndSARS protests. According to him, Nigerians have waited long for electoral reforms that will strengthen transparency and credibility.

The PDP spokesman also expressed concern over declining voter participation, noting that only 26 per cent of registered voters took part in the last general election. He argued that future elections must show clear improvement to restore public confidence and democratic growth.
