Nigeria is not yet technically prepared for real-time electronic transmission of election results, according to former INEC National Commissioner, Dr. Mustapha Lecky.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Lecky weighed in on the Senate’s recent rejection of a proposal to make e-transmission of results compulsory in the amended Electoral Act. He explained that real-time transmission only makes sense where electronic voting is already in place.
According to him, Nigeria still conducts elections using manual ballot papers, which are physically counted at polling units in full view of voters and party agents. In such a system, he argued, instant electronic transmission is unnecessary and impractical.
Lecky stressed that electronic voting and electronic transmission must go hand in hand. Without fully adopting e-voting, pushing for live transmission of results creates unrealistic expectations and weakens the credibility of the debate.
As discussions on electoral reforms continue, his comments highlight a deeper issue: strengthening Nigeria’s electoral process requires a gradual, well-coordinated approach, not isolated reforms driven by pressure or public sentiment.
