EFCC Insists Omoile’s Statements Were Voluntary in Emefiele’s $4.5bn Fraud Trial

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Tuesday told the Special Offences Court in Ikeja, Lagos, that Henry Omoile, co-defendant in the alleged $4.5 billion fraud case involving former CBN Governor Godwin Emefiele, voluntarily made his extra-judicial statements.

EFCC operative Alvan Gurumnaan testified during a trial-within-trial that no officer coerced Omoile and that the statements were recorded openly at the Commission’s Lagos office in the presence of Omoile’s lawyer. The court admitted four documents dated February 26 and 27, 2024, as evidence.

Gurumnaan confirmed Omoile was properly cautioned before speaking and had written a note confirming his lawyer’s presence. Under cross-examination, he admitted the lack of video recording, attributing it to operational limitations.

Justice Oshodi adjourned further hearing to January 15 and 16, 2026.
