The Department of State Services (DSS) has initiated a five-count legal action against human rights activist Omoyele Sowore at the Federal High Court in Abuja. Notably, social media platforms 𝕏 (Twitter) and Meta (Facebook) have also been included as defendants in this case.
According to reports from Naija News, the charges stem from Sowore’s posts made on August 25 and 26, 2025, where he labeled President Bola Tinubu as a “criminal” and accused him of dishonesty regarding corruption during an official visit to Brazil.
Court documents reveal that the charges, marked FHC/ABJ/CR/484/2015, were instituted by the Federal Republic of Nigeria, with Sowore, 𝕏 Inc., and Meta Inc. listed as defendants. The DSS claims that the posts were false, defamatory, and capable of inciting public disorder, thereby violating provisions of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc) Amendment Act, 2024, and sections of the Criminal Code Act.
The first two counts accuse Sowore of knowingly posting false information on both platforms to incite a breakdown of law and order. The third and fourth counts allege defamation against President Tinubu’s character and reputation. The fifth count charges Sowore with publishing false information with the intent to cause public fear and disturbance.
