The Police Criminal Investigation Department (FCID), Alagbon, has responded to allegations that Nigerian Afrobeats star Rema used its operatives to assault an interior decorator he hired for a multi-million-naira project.
The controversy began when a Nigerian software artist, known on 𝕏 (formerly Twitter) as @software_artist, accused the singer of intimidating a female interior decorator, identified as Amaka, in a bid to avoid paying her outstanding balance for a completed renovation job.
According to the viral claims, Rema contracted Amaka to furnish his new mansion but allegedly refused to clear the balance after she had delivered on her work. The accuser further alleged that police officers were being used to harass her.
Police Responds: ‘It’s a Contract Breach, Not Intimidation’
Reacting to the claims, FCID Alagbon’s spokesperson, ASP Maiyegun Aminat, dismissed the allegations, clarifying that the matter was based on a formal petition filed against Amaka over breach of contract.
In a detailed statement, Aminat revealed that:
- A written agreement dated April 4, 2023, was signed between the petitioner and Amaka Obasi, operating as Ardeb Lifestyle Company, for a project worth ₦386 million.
- A part payment of ₦287 million was made, with the balance to be cleared upon full project completion.
- Upon inspection, the petitioner discovered that the project was incomplete and that some furniture allegedly delivered was missing from the site.
- Investigators also traced irregularities in the account linked to Ardeb Lifestyle Company, raising further concerns.
Aminat further explained that police advised both parties to hire an independent valuer to assess the project status and funds, but Amaka allegedly declined to present a valuation report or a legal representative until her eventual arrest.
She stressed that the Nigeria Police Force operates within the confines of the law and does not serve personal interests or vendettas, warning the public against misleading narratives.
“The public is hereby urged to be wary of individuals who circulate misleading information aimed at deceiving well-meaning Nigerians. The Nigeria Police Force does not serve personal interests but operates strictly in accordance with the law,” Aminat concluded.
This latest clarification has put the spotlight back on contractual disputes in Nigeria’s booming interior design industry while clearing the air around Rema’s alleged involvement.
