Music mogul and Mavin Records boss, Don Jazzy, has opened up on how he discovered Afrobeats sensation Ayra Starr and brought her into his label.
Speaking in an interview with Echo, Don Jazzy said there was a noticeable gap in the Nigerian music industry at the time for a teenage Afrobeats superstar, which made him actively search for fresh talent.
To achieve this, he asked one of his contacts to scout for promising singers in Nigerian universities. Among the list of names and social media handles sent to him was Ayra Starr’s Instagram page.
According to Don Jazzy, what caught his attention was a freestyle Ayra Starr had posted on drug abuse — a performance he said resonated with the struggles of Gen Z and showed her unique artistry.
Convinced she was the one he had been looking for, Don Jazzy tried reaching out to her directly. When she did not respond, he then contacted her brother, a move that eventually led to her joining Mavin Records.
Today, Ayra Starr has grown into one of Africa’s most celebrated young Afrobeats stars, with international recognition and hit singles to her name.
