The Nasarawa State House of Assembly has suspended Mohammad Haliru-Arabo, Chairman of Lafia Local Government, for three months over his role in the impeachment of the Council’s Speaker. The decision, announced by Speaker Danladi Jatau, follows a motion moved by Musa Ibrahim-Abubakar, Chairman of the House Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, citing the need to restore peace and ensure a neutral investigation.
Deputy Chairman Uba Arikiya has been directed to oversee Lafia Local Government during the suspension. Lawmakers argued that Haliru-Arabo’s involvement in legislative matters outside his mandate threatened the stability of the local government and could escalate conflict across the state. The move was supported by several representatives to serve as a warning to other LGAs.
In a related development, the House passed the first reading of a bill to repeal and re-enact the Nasarawa State Harmonization and Administration of Revenue Law, with the second reading scheduled for 16th December, 2025.
