The Rivers State Government House in Port Harcourt was a ghost town on Thursday, as Governor Siminalayi Fubara failed to make his much-anticipated return following the expiration of the six-month emergency rule imposed by President Bola Tinubu on March 18.
Hundreds of loyalists, including members of the governor’s Ijaw ethnic nationality, gathered at the gates of the Brick House from the early hours of the morning, expecting a dramatic comeback.
But by nightfall, Fubara was nowhere to be seen. His absence left supporters frustrated and disappointed, with many returning home after hours under the scorching sun.
Earlier in the day, the outgone Sole Administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd.), officially vacated office, handing over duties before pulling out of the Government House. His exit had fueled expectations that the governor would immediately resume, but that never happened.
Reliable sources within the Brick House told Vanguard that the seat of power is now largely deserted. Members of the Government House Press Corps, protocol officers, and civil servants were reportedly denied entry.
The source revealed:
“Nothing is happening in that place (Government House) now, until the governor resumes. That place is just empty. Many workers were not allowed to even enter. Only some security operatives and a few civil servants are around. Until the governor comes back, that place will remain quiet.”
Governor Fubara, who has reportedly been out of the country, has yet to make any official statement on when he will return to reclaim his seat.
