German police are investigating what could become one of the country’s biggest bank robberies after thieves drilled into a Sparkasse bank vault in Gelsenkirchen and carted away valuables estimated at up to $105 million. The crime reportedly took place during the Christmas break when most banks were closed.
Authorities said the suspects drilled through a thick concrete wall into the vault, broke open thousands of safe deposit boxes and escaped with cash and valuables belonging to customers. The operation went undetected until a fire alarm alerted police in the early hours of December 29.
Angry customers later gathered outside the bank, demanding answers as many said their life savings were kept in the vault. Witnesses reported seeing masked men carrying large bags into a nearby parking garage, while CCTV footage allegedly captured a stolen black Audi RS6 used in the escape.
Investigators estimate losses between €10 million and €90 million as the manhunt continues.
