Christmas in Darkness: Nationwide Power Outage Hits Nigerians Amid Pipeline Explosion

Millions of Nigerians spent Christmas in darkness due to a nationwide power outage linked to an explosion on the Escravos-Lagos Gas Pipeline in Delta State. The pipeline, owned by the Nigerian Gas Processing and Transportation Company (NGPTC), a subsidiary of NNPC, caused a significant drop in electricity supply across the country.

The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) stated that repair work is “near completion” and power would be restored soon. Currently, the 11 electricity distribution companies (Discos) are receiving only 3,272 megawatts from the national grid, far below the 6,000MW target set by the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu.

Experts, including Kunle Olubiyo of the Nigeria Consumer Protection Network, warn that systemic failures pre- and post-privatization have left the sector struggling, highlighting the persistent challenges in Nigeria’s power infrastructure.
