CAN Decries Rising Attacks on Christians, Urges Government to End Insecurity and Deliver Justice

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has expressed alarm over what it described as the escalating wave of insecurity and targeted attacks against Christian communities, particularly in northern Nigeria.

In a statement titled “Christian Genocide – CAN Clarifies Position” and signed by its President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, the association said it was compelled to speak clearly and truthfully amid growing public debate about faith-based violence in the country.

CAN affirmed that “many Christian communities, especially in the North, have suffered severe attacks, loss of life, and destruction of worship centers,” calling the incidents “painful reminders of the need for government and security agencies to act decisively to protect every Nigerian citizen.”

The association noted that it has long worked to draw both national and international attention to the persecution of Christians in Nigeria, including recording religiously motivated killings, engaging with global partners, and petitioning the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague.

However, CAN lamented that these calls for justice “are too often met with delay or denial,” urging urgent, transparent, and equitable action to end the killings and ensure perpetrators face the law.

While acknowledging government efforts, Archbishop Okoh called for “redoubled commitment to equitable protection and swift justice.” He also appealed to Christian leaders to remain united and wise, emphasizing that Nigeria’s healing “will come from courage, not denial — courage to face our failures, grieve together, and rebuild trust for genuine peace.”
